Working While Studying in Portugal: What Your D4 Permit Actually Allows

Portugal allows holders of a student residence permit to work, which is more generous than several other EU destinations. The catch is that studies must remain your primary activity.

There is no fixed weekly hour cap written into the student permit, but immigration expects your employment not to interfere with attendance or academic progress. Falling attendance or grades can trigger a review of your permit.

Before starting work you must notify the immigration authority. This is a procedural step, not an application, but skipping it creates a compliance problem later — including at renewal, when your file is examined again.

You will also need a Portuguese tax number (NIF) and a social security number, and your employer will register the contract. If you opened a Portuguese bank account on arrival, salary payment is straightforward.
