The Complete D4 Visa Checklist for Portugal: Step-by-Step Guide

The D4 is Portugal's long-stay national visa for study programmes longer than twelve months. It converts into a residence permit once you land, which is why consulates review the file so carefully — they are effectively pre-approving your residency.

Start with the core identity set: a passport valid for at least three months beyond your intended stay, two recent passport photos, and the completed national visa application form signed by you. If you are under 18, add parental authorisation, legalised and translated.

Next comes the academic block: your acceptance letter from the Portuguese institution, proof of enrolment, and proof that the required tuition instalment has been paid. Consulates will not accept a conditional offer alone — enrolment and payment must already be in place before you apply.

Then the financial and housing block: proof of sufficient means for the duration of your studies, proof of accommodation in Portugal, valid travel and health insurance, and a criminal record certificate from your country of residence, apostilled and translated into Portuguese.

Finally, the authorisation for the Portuguese immigration authority to consult your criminal record, which is a standard form handed in with the file. Once submitted, plan for roughly 90 days until a decision.
