From Acceptance Letter to Residence Permit: What Happens After You Apply

Submitting at the consulate is the midpoint of the process, not the end. Understanding what follows prevents the two most common mistakes: booking flights too early, and arriving without an appointment scheduled.

After submission, expect roughly 90 days for a decision. Some consulates move faster; plan around the longer figure. During this period the file may be returned for a clarification — responding within days rather than weeks is what keeps the timeline intact.

On approval, the D4 is issued as a visa valid for entry, usually covering four months and two entries. Inside that window you travel to Portugal and attend your appointment with the immigration authority to convert the visa into a residence permit.

The residence permit is the document that actually governs your stay: it allows you to work alongside your studies (with prior notification), travel within Schengen, and later apply for renewal or family reunification.
